Used Oil Management
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), used oil is any petroleum-based or synthetic that has been used. During normal use, impurities such as dirt, metal scrapings, water or chemicals, can get mixed in with the oil, so that in time, the oil no longer performs well. Eventually, this used oil must be replaced with virgin or re-refined oil to do the job correctly. One gallon of oil can contaminate over a million gallons of fresh water if poured into the ground. The negative impact of used oil on our environment is simply too great and for this reason the EPA created a regulation that lays out specific requirements for used oil handling and disposal.
This course is designed to provide you with skills to properly handle and dispose of used oil according to EPA regulation 40 CFR 279, however, there are no specific training requirements under the regulation. When this course is over you should be able to recognize what constitutes used oil, identify proper ways to handle used oil, and identify ways to recycle used oil and the benefits of recycling.
