Back Injury Prevention
In 2009, sprain, strain, and tear injuries accounted for 40 percent of total injury and illness cases requiring days away from work. Soreness and pain (including the back) accounted for 11 percent of total cases. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), more than one million workers suffer back injuries each year, and back injuries account for one of every five workplace injuries or illnesses. Further, one-fourth of all compensation indemnity claims involve back injuries, costing industry billions of dollars on top of the pain and suffering borne by employees. Many job requirements include the lifting, carrying, holding, and maneuvering of materials which is why it is important to train employees on the proper techniques that minimize the chances of back injuries.
Upon completion of this learning event, the Learner will demonstrate knowledge of the major causes of workplace back injuries and how to prevent them.
