Description

A confined space has limited or restricted means for entry or exit, and it is not designed for continuous employee occupancy. According to data collected by the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL), Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) program, fatal injuries in confined spaces fluctuated from a low of 81 in 1998 to a high of 100 in 2000. During the five-year period, there was an average of 92 fatalities per year. Confined spaces include, but are not limited to, underground vaults, tanks, storage bins, manholes, pits, silos, process vessels, and pipelines.

Upon completion of this learning event, the Learner will be able to identify the major hazards associated with working in and around confined spaces, and recognize methods to minimize or eliminate those hazards. This course covers a wide range of confined space awareness requirements that include sections 1910.146(b), 1910.146(c)(2), 1910.146(c)(3), 1910.146(c)(5)(ii), 1910.146(d)(3), 1910.146(d)(5)(i), 1910.146(e), 1910.146(h), 1910.146(i), and 1910.146(j).
