Hot Work / Arc Welding
Hot work is any work that involves burning, welding, using fire- or spark-producing tools, or that produces a source of ignition. Workers performing hot work such as welding, cutting, brazing, soldering, and grinding are exposed to the risk of fires from ignition of flammable or combustible materials in the space, and from leaks of flammable gas into the space, from hot work equipment. To date in 2010, The Chemical Safety Board has learned of 15 serious hot work-related fires and explosions that caused six reported fatalities and numerous injuries.
This course covers the general hazards and PPE of welding, cutting and brazing. Upon completion of the learning event, the learner will have displayed the ability to recognize common hot work hazards on oil and gas production and exploration sites, and identify OSHA’s required related safe work practices. This course will not instruct operators of welding equipment on how to use that specific equipment; however it will inform workers over the controls, safe work practices, and PPE that should be used to eliminate and reduce the risk of injury.
