Description

The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that 404 fatalities occurred in 2009 due to exposure of harmful substances or environments. The CDC states that lead is used in many industries, including construction, mining, and manufacturing. In each of these industries, workers are at risk of being exposed to lead, by breathing it in, ingesting it, or coming in contact with it. Lead is a toxic metal that is also used in burning fossil fuels. It can be combined with other metals to produce alloys. Lead alloys are often used to make batteries, ammunition, and other metal products. Years ago, lead was also used regularly in paint, ceramics, caulk, and pipe solder among other things.

Upon completion of this learning event, employees will demonstrate knowledge of lead exposure hazards and controls used to minimize or eliminate those hazards. Employees will learn about the effects of lead exposure, their rights as workers in a facility with lead present, and the use of personal protective equipment and other methods to reduce the risk of hazardous exposure. This course is intended to assist the employer in meeting the requirements of OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.1025. In addition to this course the employer may also need to provide the Respiratory Protection and Personal Protective Equipment courses.
