Material Handling
Whether you work in an office, a junkyard, a warehouse or anywhere in between, chances are that you handle and store some sort of material from time to time. Workers frequently cite the weight and bulkiness of objects that they lift as major contributing factors to their injuries. In 1999, for example, more than 420,000 workplace accidents resulted in back injuries. Bending, followed by twisting and turning, were the more commonly cited movements that caused back injuries. In this course, employees will learn to recognize lifting hazards and safe lifting techniques, proper methods for safe material stacking and storage, proper use of mechanical material handling equipment and the role of ergonomics in safe materials handling.
This course is designed to teach workers how to safely lift objects, either manually or with lifting equipment. OSHA does not have specific manual lifting standards; however they do recommend employees receive formal training when their job requires lifting. This course meets the definition of formal training and can provide general awareness over safe lifting techniques. This course also covers topics outlined in 29 CFR 1910.180, 1910.184, 1910.178 & 1926.555.
