Material Safety Data Sheets
According to OSHA, about 32 million employees work with and are potentially exposed to one or more chemical hazards. There are approximately 650,000 existing chemical products available today, and hundreds more are introduced annually. Material Safety Data Sheets or MSDSs are created to communicate the hazards associated with any chemical produced or imported into the workplace. OSHA recognized the potential that hazardous chemicals pose in the workplace and from there created the Hazard Communication or HazCom Standard.
This course can help to fulfill the training requirements outlined in OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.1200(h). The training requires that "employees are informed of the location and availability of….MSDSs…and to know the physical and health hazards of the chemicals in their workplace." This course will teach employees the purpose of MSDSs including the required PPE, work practices, and emergency procedures. Employers will have to train their employees over their company's specific Hazcom program and the location of MSDSs. Employees will learn to recognize the purpose of MSDSs, identify the sections of MSDSs and their contents, use a glossary to find common MSDS terms and identify where MSDSs should be kept.
