Description

According to OSHA, ionizing radiation has been used in workplaces since 1896 and has grown significantly in recent years. Currently, ionizing radiation is also used to neutralize harmful biological agents, including anthrax, as well as microorganisms in certain food. There are many diverse sources of exposure to ionizing radiation and conditions in which employees can be exposed. Exposures can result from natural sources, such as radioactive materials that exist in the soil, and from cosmic sources (i.e., the sun). Workers can also be exposed to radiation from sources that result from human activities.

This course is designed to give you the knowledge and skills you need to be informed when it comes to radiation in your workplace. This course is covered under the General Duty Clause. There are no specific training requirements for radiation hazards other than if they exist, your employees must be informed in their existence, and how to prevent exposure. This course discusses ways to reduce exposure if radiation hazards exist at your workplace and can be used to provide general baseline knowledge about radiation hazards. When the course is over, you should be able to identify the source and characteristics of radiation, identify types of radiation and their potential health effects, and identify basic safety considerations when working around radioactive materials.
