Struck By and Caught Between
Struck by and caught in between objects are two of the most causes of construction fatalities. Struck-by injuries are caused when you’re struck by an object. One of the most dangerous struck-by hazards comes from vehicles and heavy equipment. In fact, vehicle- and equipment-related struck-by injuries are one of the leading causes of accidental death on construction sites, and about three-quarters of struck-by deaths involve heavy equipment such as trucks and cranes. Some common examples of Caught-in and caught-between injuries include: trench or excavation collapse, hand or foot caught in rotating equipment like augurs, rollers or wheels, unguarded moving parts in machinery, turned over vehicles, accidents during equipment or machinery maintenance, and accidents involving rigging used to lift or pull heavy materials.
Upon completion of the learning event, the Learner will have displayed the ability to recognize common stuck by/caught between hazards associated with work in the construction industry and their recommended safe work practices. This course provides an overview of 29 CFR 1926.20. The regulation states that each employee must be trained to the full requirements of that standard.
