Oil Rig Safety (Oil & Gas)

Employment in the oil and gas well drilling industry accounted for 63,012 jobs in September 2009, according to the most recent period available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As this industry continues to grow, so do the hazards of a workplace injury with each new hire. Today’s oil rigs still operate on basic principles of drill goes in the ground and oil comes out, but there are many steps in the process, and many machines and equipment used. All those steps, machines and parts increase the number of hazards you can face.

This course is designed for employees that are new to working on oil rigs. It covers the basic process of production and common hazards of oil rig work such as slips, trips and falls and struck-by and caught-between. There are no regulations that cover oil rig work specifically, other than the General Duty Clause, therefore there are specific training requirements outlined for oil rig workers; however this course does briefly cover PPE (29 CFR 1910.132) and Personal Fall Arrest Systems (29 CFR 1926.104). Upon taking this course, the learner will be introduced to the basic terminology and operations associated with oil rigs. The learner will recognize the basic function of an oil rig and its major stages of operation, and recognize the major hazards of working on an oil rig. In addition to this course, the employer will be interested in the other courses in our Oil and Gas Series.
