170+ EmployeesWith a population of over 930,000 residents, the City of Austin is the fourth-largest city in Texas, as well as the state capital. One of the fastest-growing cities in the country, the municipality operates 261 separate city facilities encompassing over 6 million square feet and distributed over 300 square miles. The City of Austin Building Services Department is tasked with managing the impact of this rapid growth and ensuring that city facilities are well maintained and environmentally sustainable through embracing a proactive and strategic approach to employee training and facilities management.

The Building Services Department needed a large and diverse catalog of effective and engaging online municipal safety training to meet the multi-faceted training requirements of the various support roles required to maintain city facilities. They also needed a sophisticated online learning management system to assign, deliver and track their training.

Overcoming Barriers260+ Facilities

With employees in support roles including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, custodial, administration and facilities maintenance, the City of Austin Building Services Department required access to a complete library of training products, including courses on over 40 distinct safety topics.

Female electricianSafetySkills provided the Building Services Department with a library of over 350 course titles to meet their training needs, including a series of courses tailored specifically to municipal workers and the unique challenges they face.

The City of Austin considers sustainability to be a cornerstone of all city operations. In addition to our numerous occupational health and safety titles, the SafetySkills course library also includes a number of courses over environmental protection, waste management, and other topics vital to sustainable operations.

The municipality also needed an internet-based learning management system (LMS) capable of administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of these courses. They needed the system to be accessible in any city facility, on any major platform, at any time during their operating hours. It also needed to be capable of supporting multiple users at once.

The SafetySkills user-friendly, enterprise-class LMS was able to exceed every one of the Building Services Department’s learning management requirements. The cloud-based platform can easily support hundreds of simultaneous users and provides 24/7 access from nearly any device.

After a year with SafetySkills, the City of Austin Building Services Department was lured away by a competitor claiming to offer the same services and content at a lower price. After only two months the department was so unhappy with the quality of the products and services provided by the competitor that they cancelled their contract and signed a new 3-year agreement with SafetySkills.
