Bloodborne Pathogens

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that healthcare workers sustain nearly 600,000 percutaneous injuries annually involving contaminated sharps such as needlepoints, broken glass, exposed ends of dental wires and any other contaminated object that can penetrate skin. Workers in many different occupations are at risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens, including Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDS. Under OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standards employers must train occupationally exposed employees at initial assignment and at least annually by a knowledgeable person.

Upon completion of this learning event, the learner will demonstrate knowledge of the hazards of bloodborne pathogens in the workplace. This course covers certain training requirements outlined in 29 CFR 1910.1030(g)(2)(i-vii). The training requirements that are fulfilled by this course include an explanation of the modes of transmission of BBP; information on the Hepatitis B vaccine and its effectiveness; an explanation of the use and limitations of methods that will prevent or reduce exposure; an explanation of the basis of selecting PPE; information on the appropriate actions to take in case of a potential exposure and an explanation of signs and labels/color coding.
